Hello. Thank you for visiting our site today!
Today is July 7, Tanabata.
Tanabata – A Magical Japanese Festival of Stars and Wishes
Tanabata, or the “Star Festival,” is a beloved Japanese celebration held every year on July 7th. It originates from an old Chinese legend about two lovers Orihime, the weaving princess, and Hikoboshi, the cowherd who are separated by the Milky Way and allowed to meet only once a year on this special night.
On Tanabata, people across Japan write their wishes on colorful strips of paper called tanzaku, and hang them on bamboo branches. Wishes may be about love, health, success, or personal dreams. Cities, shopping malls, and temples are often decorated with vibrant ornaments, and in the evening, many places feature beautiful light displays and festive events.
Depending on the region, you might also find parades, traditional music performances, and lively street food stalls turning the day into a summer celebration full of charm and color. Among the most famous are the Sendai Tanabata Festival in August, and the Shonan Hiratsuka Tanabata Festival in Kanagawa.
If you’re in Japan during this time, don’t miss the chance to write your own wish and enjoy the beautiful, romantic atmosphere of Tanabata. It’s a unique way to experience Japanese culture peaceful, heartfelt, and truly unforgettable.
